On 4th February 2016, the UK, Germany, Kuwait, Norway and United Nations co-hosted a conference on the Syria crisis in London.
At the one-day conference, the UK invested an extra £1.2billion in international aid to support Syria and the region. The UK is the second biggest donor, and this announcement takes the UK’s total investment to £2.3billion. This funding will further support relief packages, safe sanitation and hygiene provisions, access to medical care and to safe, clean drinking water.
Overall the conference raised over (US)$11 billion in pledges, with $5.8 billlion for 2016 alone. The further $5.4 billion will help partners to plan ahead for the future.
Closing the Conference the Secretary of State for International Development, Rt Hon Justine Greening MP said "in the years ahead we can truly look back with pride and with hope on what we’ve managed to accomplish today."
